Pillar Point Harbor, Half Moon Bay CA
Crab pots. ‘Tis the season for Dungeness crab.
It’s a hard life for crabbers in California. The much sought after Dungeness crabs are usually fished from the middle of November through the new year. Last year, the season got a late start because the crabs, at the beginning of the season, showed high levels of domoic acid in their bodies, a chemical that is unhealthy for human consumption. The chemical becomes less as the crabs diet changes over the season.
This year the season got a late start due to the number of Humpback whales that are migrating now along the coast. As recent as this week the Fish and Wildlife department counted 60 whales along the coast between Mendocino and Half Moon Bay. The nets and ropes that the crabbers use pose a problem of entangling the whales. So until the whales move along, the season is not open in that area and crab pots remain unused. Stacked and ready in the harbors.
