I have been a photographer since childhood. My passion ignited on a 50 mile hike in the Sierra as a boy scout. My compact instamatic camera got a workout. Shortly after, I graduated to an SLR camera. I wore my first SLR, a Praktica, around my neck for almost all my senior year in high school.

Golden Gate Bridge. Framed in trees

I sometimes imagine what the Golden Gate looked like before the bridge was built. Back centuries ago, indiginous people might wake up near this spot and look into the spectacular bay and islands. This photo was taken at Lands End, the western most land in San Francisco. From the trail at the top of the hill, you can view the Golden Gate. Perhaps imagine what the view was like before the bridge was constructed.

The bridge certainly was meant for “progress.” To help merge together the cities and towns to the north of San Francisco. And progress sometimes comes at a cost to beauty. If you are from the bay area, you might remember the embarcadero freeway. Built to move people and goods easily, it was a raised highway along the San Francisco waterfront. It also was an ugly eyesore that blocked the view of our beautiful bay. Thankfully, an earthquake destroyed part of the structure and it was ultimately torn down.

I use these two structures as examples of how “progress” can enhance or detract from nature's beauty. The Golden Gate Bridge was designed and constructed to enhance the space it was being built in. And now, as I imagine the view from Lands End without the bridge, I can also say that (in my opinion) the view of the Golden Gate with the bridge is just as beautiful.
