Pelicans are one of the largest shorebirds one finds on the California coast. These are California brown pelicans. They travel in flocks, or as I like to say shifts. For example, here in Pescadero, there is a coastal pond where they rest as a flock while the feeding flock is out over the ocean. When the feeding shift is done, they fly back to the pond, where the resting shift then takes off to start feeding. And so forth.
