There are a number of cities in the bay area that sport a city gateway sign. Burlingame, Pleasanton, Redwood City to name a few. I’m always on the lookout for a composition of these interesting civic signs. The sign in Redwood City is right next to the CalTrain station, so I’ve been working on an image that includes the train and the sign. No luck yet, but here with the beginning of fall colors, the turning leaves make this image a wonderful choice.
The slogan? Was part of a contest back in 1925 to find a new slogan for the burgeoning city and county seat. “Climate Best By Government Test”, submitted by the then Chairman of the Redwood City Chamber of Commerce, won the 10 buck prize. When asked about the specifics of the “test”, the author said he made it up.
